While CrossFit gloves are pretty straightforward, they still vary quite a bit. To ensure you’re choosing the best pair for you and your workout needs, we’ve decided to create a user-friendly, detailed buying guide.
Durability
Are you rough and tough on your gloves? Chances are that you are. Genuine leather is going to be the most durable material for CrossFit gloves, but not everyone likes the higher price tag that comes with it.
Leather is great in the fact that it can be “broken in”, similar to how a baseball glove works. It becomes extremely comfortable at this point, and even forms to the shape of the bar, making it easier to grip.
However, some neoprene gloves can also be quite durable, if they’re structured correctly. Generally speaking, however, this isn’t the case.
Wrist Support
Supporting the wrists is a huge function of CrossFit grips. Wrists are susceptible to injury, particularly while working out so heavily.
To support the wrists, look for a glove that features an adequate amount of padding around the wrist, that is also easily adjustable, and preferably can be adjusted to at least 3 positions.
If the wrist straps are a bit longer, these are preferable, as they provide a further level of support. However, keep in mind that you may prefer the feeling of shorter ones.
There are typically two types of closures/fastenings, which are Velcro, or hook-and-eye closures. Occasionally, you’ll have slip-ons, but we don’t really recommend them, as you can’t adjust them like the others.
Velcro is our favorite, as it’s so easy to use, and can be adjusted the quickest.
Grip
Typically, in CrossFit workouts, you’ll be doing all kinds of exercises. You’ll generally be lifting weights, jumping rope, doing pull-ups, rowing, and so much more in your home gym.
These exercises require a strong, solid grip that is not going to slip off. Holding onto bars, jumping rope, lifting weights, etc. all require you to hold on to something, which means you need gloves with sufficient grip, to avoid injury, while preventing callouses and skin rips.
We prefer genuine leather grips, due to their durability and ability to form to the shape of the bar, however, it also depends on personal preference. Silicone padding is extremely comfortable, but occasionally, not as “sticky”.
Padding
Another benefit of gloves is comfort. CrossFit can be really hard on the hands, creating callouses due the pressure of holding on to bars and such.
Padding is what you’ll want to help combat this discomfort – particularly on the palm, and even on the back of the hand. Padding will keep you comfy, while also helping to provide support and decrease the chance of injury.
The thickness of padding will vary, depending on the gloves you select. While you may be tempted to go for thicker padding, keep in mind that the added thickness could make it a bit more difficult to keep a solid grip on the bar.
Textured surfaces such as a suede or rubber coating can offer more traction, to help keep a superior grip.
Breathability
Breathability is another aspect to take into consideration with any kind of physical exercise, as you’ll most likely be sweating and generating heat.
When it comes to grip being so important, you’ll have to take special importance in considering how breathable your gloves are. Sweat can affect your grip, which not only affects performance, but can increase the chance of injury.
Leather is generally not very breathable, but this will depend on the style of glove you select. Neoprene is more breathable, but typically not as durable.
Fingers
